Watchful Lover

I never understood how you managed to stay afloat

With all the world balancing on your shoulders.

How you glided about so smoothly

Without tripping under the weight.

A careless grin thrown over your shoulder

Bright emeralds gleaming in the afternoon sun.

To say you were a miracle would be

To say flowers were okay

Or spring was feasible.

I loved you the way I loved beauty

Always in appreciation

Scared to get too close lest I tamper with your shine.

The universe knew what it was doing when it cast you down.

It understood the danger of those eyes

The recklessness of that fiery hair

The never-ending need for change in your small person.

I wanted you like a flower

To sit

Under my ever-watchful gaze.

I wanted to pluck you

And watch that smile that always came so easily

Open like wings unfurling.

But alas-

While here

You weren’t truly.

While mine

You weren’t honestly.

You belong to the world

And I-

The watchful lover

Will always do simply that.

Watching lovingly from afar.

Shine brightly my flower.

I’ll be here always.

-Your forever admirer
